Underwater vs. surface signalling — knowing which tool to use

Underwater attention devices
Sound travels exceptionally well through water — much farther and faster than in air. A tank banger (a rubber loop with a hard ball that snaps against the cylinder) produces a sharp metallic clang that carries clearly to nearby divers. The aluminum magnetic rattle produces a similar sharp noise but stores silently — a magnet on the tip keeps the ball from rattling unintentionally during the dive and is only released when you want to use it. Both are standard communication tools used by Divemasters on guided dives to alert the group, point out marine life, or signal a concern.

Surface whistles — compact, always-on safety
A safety whistle clipped to your BCD inflator hose or D-ring requires no batteries, never fails, and produces a sound audible several hundred metres across open water — enough to alert a nearby boat or surface support team. Every diver should carry one regardless of what other signalling devices are in their kit. The Aropec safety whistle clips to any standard D-ring and comes in bright orange for easy visibility. Dive Alert Plus — the loudest surface signal available
The Dive Alert Plus attaches directly to your BCD power inflator hose and uses regulated tank air to produce a horn blast audible from one mile away at the surface, and detectable by other divers underwater. It is significantly louder than any whistle — important in open water, rough seas, or noisy boat environments where a whistle might not be heard. It also works underwater, which no whistle can match. If you boat dive regularly or dive in any environment where surface support needs to locate you quickly, the Dive Alert Plus is the professional-grade solution.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a tank banger and an aluminum rattle?

Both are underwater noise-makers used to get a buddy's attention, but they work differently. A tank banger is a rubber loop with a hard plastic ball that wraps around the cylinder — pull the ball away and release it to strike the tank. It is attached to the tank at all times and always ready to use. An aluminum magnetic rattle is a handheld stick with a ball inside — the magnet prevents unintentional noise during the dive, and when you want to signal you simply shake it. The rattle produces a slightly different sound and can be clipped to a D-ring rather than occupying space on the tank. Both are effective; some divers carry both.

Does the Dive Alert Plus work with all BCDs?

The Dive Alert Plus attaches to the low-pressure inflator hose between the regulator first stage and the BCD power inflator. It is compatible with virtually all standard recreational BCD power inflator configurations. Installation involves connecting it inline on the inflator hose — a simple push-fit connection. The device draws air from the tank only when activated, and the draw is minimal. It does not affect normal BCD inflation or deflation. If you are unsure whether it is compatible with a specific BCD or regulator hose configuration, contact us before ordering.

Should I carry both a whistle and a Dive Alert Plus?

Yes — they serve slightly different roles and complement each other. The Dive Alert Plus is louder and more effective in open water or rough conditions, but it requires tank air — if your tank is empty or the regulator is not connected, it cannot be used. A whistle requires nothing but your own breath and works independently of any diving equipment. Carrying both means you have a primary (Dive Alert Plus) and a backup (whistle) — the correct approach for any safety-critical system. Both together weigh under 200 grams.
