What goes in the water matters
Every product that contacts your skin before or during a dive — sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, soap — enters the water when you swim. Chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone have been shown to cause coral bleaching and disrupt marine reproduction at concentrations as low as parts per trillion. Conventional shampoos and soaps contain synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and surfactants that do not break down quickly in marine environments. Single-use plastic — the underwater perspective
Divers see plastic pollution more directly than most people — bags drifting past on a reef, bottles wedged in coral heads, microplastics coating sandy bottoms that looked pristine from the surface. Carrying a reusable silicone water bottle instead of a plastic one, using reusable mesh bags instead of single-use plastic bags at the dive site, and choosing products packaged in recyclable or refillable containers are small individual changes that add up at the community level. Reef-safe personal care — what it actually means
The term "reef-safe" is not regulated — any company can use it on packaging without independent verification. The meaningful distinction is in the active ingredients list: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (mineral sunscreens) are not harmful to coral; oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, and octocrylene (chemical sunscreens) are. The same principle applies to other personal care products — look for the actual ingredient list, not the marketing claim on the front of the bottle. Sustainable gear choices
Beyond personal care, sustainable choices in dive gear include: choosing quality equipment that lasts 10 to 20 years rather than budget gear replaced every few seasons; keeping equipment maintained and repaired rather than replaced; purchasing from retailers who stock genuine replacement parts so a broken buckle does not send an entire piece of gear to landfill; and choosing brands with published sustainability commitments.
