Frequently asked questions
How do I replace a mouthpiece on my scuba regulator?
Cut or remove the existing zip tie securing the mouthpiece to the second stage exhaust tee. Pull the old mouthpiece off the exhaust tee — it may require a firm pull if it has been in place for a long time. Slide the new mouthpiece onto the exhaust tee, making sure it seats fully and the flange sits flat against the second stage body. Secure with a new zip tie, pulling it snug but not so tight that it cuts into the mouthpiece silicone. We carry no-bump zip ties that eliminate the sharp tail usually left after cutting a standard tie — a worthwhile upgrade if you have ever caught the sharp end on your neck or suit.
What is the difference between a standard mouthpiece and a mouldable mouthpiece?
A standard silicone mouthpiece is a pre-formed shape that fits most mouths acceptably but is not custom to any individual. A mouldable mouthpiece — such as the Seacure Mouldable Mouthpiece — is made from a thermoplastic silicone that softens in hot water, allowing you to bite down and shape the bite tabs to the exact contour of your teeth. Once cooled, the mouthpiece holds that shape. A mouldable mouthpiece reduces jaw clenching, distributes bite pressure more evenly, and significantly reduces fatigue on longer dives. The Seacure Custom Mouthpiece is the most advanced option — heat-formed to your exact bite pattern and trimmed to fit, it is the closest equivalent to a custom dental guard.
Will a regulator mouthpiece fit my snorkel as well?
Regulator mouthpieces and snorkel mouthpieces use the same standardized connector diameter on most products, so they are often interchangeable. However, the bite tab length and mouthpiece depth can differ — a regulator mouthpiece tends to be slightly deeper, while snorkel mouthpieces may be shorter. The Seacure mouldable mouthpieces explicitly note compatibility with both regulators and snorkels. We also carry smaller mouthpieces that have a smaller orifice to fit a smaller opening on a kid's or child's snorkel.
How often should I replace my regulator mouthpiece?
Inspect your mouthpiece before every dive trip. If the bite tabs show tears, holes, or significant compression that no longer bounces back, replace them. A torn mouthpiece allows water to enter past the bite tabs, which is uncomfortable and distracting underwater. Most divers replace mouthpieces every one to three years depending on frequency of use and how aggressively they clench. Divers who experience jaw pain during or after diving should consider a mouldable mouthpiece as a first step before assuming the regulator itself needs adjustment.
