Frequently asked questions
Do I need a dive knife or will a line cutter do?
For most recreational divers, a compact line cutting device handles the most common entanglement scenarios — fishing line, monofilament, and thin rope. A knife provides additional capability: thicker rope and kelp, prying objects, and any task requiring a blade rather than a cutting slot. If you dive in environments with significant kelp, heavy rope, or where a general-purpose blade might be useful, a knife is the better choice. If you dive primarily on open reefs and are equipping yourself for safety redundancy only, a line cutter or Sea Snip is sufficient and more convenient. Having both — a knife on the leg and a line cutter on the chest — is the most complete setup.
How do I maintain a stainless steel dive knife?
Rinse with fresh water after every dive in salt water. Dry the blade and sheath completely before storing — moisture trapped in a closed sheath is the primary cause of rust on stainless dive knives. If rust spots develop, a light application of non-abrasive stainless steel polish removes them without damaging the blade. Keep the edge sharp — a sharp blade requires less force to cut, which means less risk of the blade slipping. Have the blade professionally sharpened when it no longer cuts fishing line cleanly with a single stroke. Inspect the sheath locking mechanism before each dive trip — a sheath that releases too easily can lose the knife during the dive; one that is too stiff may be difficult to draw under stress.
What is the Fog Cutter 2-in-1 and who is it for?
The Mini Fog Cutter is a compact knife with an integrated scissors blade — the knife blade handles standard cutting tasks, and the built-in scissors handle situations where a sawing action is difficult: cutting thin monofilament, netting, and fine line that tends to slide off a knife blade rather than cutting cleanly. The scissors action works through materials that a blade struggles with. It suits divers who want a single compact tool that covers both blade cutting and scissor cutting, particularly useful in areas with heavy monofilament fishing line presence. It mounts on a BCD or can be leg-mounted via the sheath.
What part of my leg should I strap my dive knife?
Strap your dive knife to the inside of your calf rather than the outside of your leg to prevent the knife or sheath from snagging on underwater hazards like fishing lines, kelp, or wrecks. By placing it on the inside of your leg, it can be easily reached by both your left or right hands.
