Frequently asked questions
What Big Blue video lights do you carry and which is right for my camera?
We carry Big Blue video lights across a range of output levels suited to different camera setups and shooting applications. Compact models in the 1000 to 2000 lumen range suit a first video light on a compact camera or action camera tray — light enough to not unbalance a small rig and sufficient for close-range reef subjects in clear water. Higher-output models from 3000 to 6000 lumens suit serious video work, dual-light configurations, and shooting in the reduced light conditions of Canadian lakes or deeper reef environments. All Big Blue video lights use 1-inch ball-mount connections, making them compatible with any standard underwater camera arm system — Sealife Flex-Connect (via adapter), Big Blue, Ultralight, and others. Contact us with your camera model and current tray setup and we can recommend the right Big Blue light for your specific configuration.
Can Big Blue video lights be used with a Sealife camera and Flex-Connect tray?
Yes — Big Blue lights use a standard 1-inch ball mount and can be attached to Sealife Flex-Connect arms using a Flex-Connect to ball-mount adapter. The ball clamp on the Flex-Connect arm accepts a 1-inch ball, and Big Blue lights attach via their ball-mount base in the same way they mount to any other arm system. This makes Big Blue a practical lighting option for divers who use a Sealife camera and Flex-Connect tray but want the wider output range available in Big Blue's light lineup. See the blog post on Underwater Camera Setups for examples of mixed-brand setups using Big Blue lights with Sealife and other camera systems.
How do I choose between Big Blue's dive lights and their video lights?
Big Blue makes two distinct product lines that look similar but serve different purposes. Their dive lights — narrow spot beam, high penetration, optimized for illuminating ahead of the diver — are the right choice for night diving, cave exploration, and general underwater navigation. Their video lights — wide flood beam optimized for even area illumination, typically on a camera tray — are the right choice for underwater photography and video. Using a dive light (spot beam) on a camera tray produces a distracting hot spot in the centre of your footage. Using a video light (flood beam) for night diving navigation provides poor distance penetration. Check the product description for beam angle: a narrow beam (10 to 20 degrees) is a dive light; a wide beam (90 to 140 degrees) is a video light.
