Frequently asked questions
What is a pull buoy and how is it used in swim training?
A pull buoy is a figure-eight shaped foam float held between the upper thighs during swimming. It provides buoyancy at the hips, allowing the lower body to float without kicking — isolating the upper body and allowing the swimmer to focus entirely on arm stroke, hand entry, and pull mechanics. It also builds upper body and core strength by requiring the arms to do all the propulsive work. The Swimming Foam Pull Buoy in our range is made from dense closed-cell foam that does not absorb water. Used in combination with the front swim snorkel (so you do not need to turn your head to breathe), a pull buoy and front snorkel create an effective isolation drill set for working on stroke technique without any breathing or kicking distractions.
What are swim hand paddles and who should use them?
Swim hand paddles are flat plastic panels that strap to the palm of each hand, increasing the surface area of the hand for a larger water catch during the pull phase of the stroke. They build arm and shoulder strength, increase awareness of proper hand position, and develop the muscles used in all competitive strokes. The Swimming Hand Paddles in our range are adjustable with two rubber loops across the hand and fingers. Hand paddles are typically used by intermediate to advanced swimmers — beginners whose stroke technique has not yet stabilized may reinforce poor mechanics by adding paddles before the basic catch and pull are correct. If you are new to paddles, start with smaller paddles and short sets rather than full training distances.
Do I need a swim cap and what is the difference between silicone and stretch fabric caps?
A swim cap keeps hair out of the face during swimming, reduces drag slightly, and protects hair from prolonged chlorine exposure. For lap swimming, a cap is practical rather than mandatory. The Cressi Super Stretch Swim Cap uses a lightweight stretch fabric that is comfortable for any hair length and dries quickly — better for sensitive scalps or hair that does not compress well under silicone. The TDO Silicone Swim Cap uses standard silicone construction — more durable, provides slightly more drag reduction, and holds its shape better over time, but feels tighter on the head and can pull at hair during removal. Silicone is the standard for competitive swimmers; stretch fabric suits recreational swimmers who prioritize comfort. Both are one-size-fits-most adult designs.
What are ankle weights used for in swimming?
Ankle weights in swimming are used to add resistance training load to kick sets, building lower body strength and endurance. The XS Scuba Ankle Weights are available in 1 pound, 1.5 pound, and 2 pound per leg increments, sold as pairs, and use a nylon strap and buckle attachment. For swimming training use, start with the lightest increment and progress gradually — ankle weights significantly increase the effort of kick sets and can cause knee strain if overused before the legs have adapted to the additional load.
