High Quality Gear -  Divemaster & Instructor tested and approved

Buy scuba tanks in Canada — aluminum and steel cylinders for recreational, technical, and sidemount diving, plus pony bottles, tank valves, and accessories. All cylinders we carry meet Transport Canada requirements for diving in Canada and ship with current documentation. In Canada, scuba tanks require an annual visual inspection (VIP) and a hydrostatic pressure test every five years — a tank out of date on either cannot be filled.

What to know about scuba tanks

Aluminum vs. steel — the core decision
Aluminum tanks are corrosion-resistant, less expensive, and the most widely available for rental worldwide — the aluminum 80 cubic foot is the standard North American dive tank. The trade-off is buoyancy: aluminum tanks become positively buoyant as gas is consumed, which most divers compensate for with extra lead weight. Steel tanks are stronger, allowing thinner walls and a more compact cylinder for equivalent volume. They remain negatively buoyant throughout the dive, which can eliminate or significantly reduce the need for weight belt ballast — a meaningful advantage for drysuit divers in Canadian cold water who already carry considerable weight.

Capacity — match it to your diving
Tank capacity is expressed in cubic feet (imperial) or litres (metric). The aluminum 80 cubic foot (approximately 11 litres at 200 bar) is the standard recreational tank and the right starting point for most divers. Smaller cylinders — 63 to 72 cubic feet — suit junior divers and shallow reef diving. Larger steel cylinders of 95 to 120 cubic feet provide extended bottom time for cold-water divers with higher gas consumption, technical divers, and drysuit divers whose breathing rate tends to run higher due to thermal stress. Pony bottles of 6 to 30 cubic feet provide an independent emergency gas supply for more demanding diving.

Canadian tank inspection requirements
Under Transport Canada regulations, all compressed gas cylinders used for diving in Canada must have a current annual visual inspection (VIP) and a hydrostatic pressure test every five years. A VIP involves a certified inspector examining the interior and exterior for corrosion, pitting, damage, and contamination. A hydrostatic test verifies the structural integrity of the cylinder under test pressure. A tank out of date on either inspection cannot legally be filled at any dive shop in Canada. When purchasing a tank — new or used — confirm the most recent hydrostatic test date stamped on the neck and ensure a current annual VIP sticker is present.

Own vs. rent
Most recreational divers who travel for diving rent tanks at their destination — transporting cylinders by air is complicated, expensive, and impractical on international travel. Owning your own tank makes the most sense for divers who dive locally and frequently in Canada, particularly in areas where rental availability is limited or where steel tank buoyancy properties provide a meaningful weight system advantage. If you dive mostly on guided trips to tropical destinations, renting is the simpler approach. If you dive locally within Canada regularly, ownership offers convenience and the ability to choose your cylinder configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher pressure rating mean a tank holds more air?

Not necessarily — pressure rating indicates the pressure at which the tank is considered full to its rated capacity, not the absolute volume of gas it holds. An aluminum 80 at 3000 PSI holds more gas than an aluminum 63 at 3000 PSI because the 80 has a larger physical volume. A steel 95 with a working pressure of 2400 PSI holds more gas than both, because its larger physical volume more than compensates for the lower working pressure. The relevant number for bottom time planning is the total cubic foot or litre capacity of the cylinder, not the working pressure alone.

What is a VIP and why does my tank need one every year?

A VIP (Visual Inspection Program) is an annual inspection of a scuba cylinder performed by a certified inspector. The inspector examines the interior of the tank for corrosion, pitting, cracking, and contamination — conditions that compromise structural integrity and cannot be detected from the outside. The exterior is also inspected for damage, dents, and signs of impact. Transport Canada requires this inspection annually for all cylinders used to store breathing gas. A tank without a current VIP sticker will not be filled by any reputable dive shop in Canada, regardless of when the last hydrostatic test was completed.

How long does a scuba tank last and when does it need to be replaced?

A well-maintained scuba cylinder can last 20 to 30 years or more with proper care and regular inspections. Steel tanks in particular have very long service lives when kept clean and dry internally. The practical limits are set by inspection results rather than calendar age — a tank that passes its annual VIP and five-year hydrostatic test is considered serviceable regardless of age. A tank that develops internal pitting, external damage, or fails a hydrostatic test must be removed from service. Aluminum tanks are more susceptible to neck thread damage from repeated valve removal, so the threads are inspected carefully during each VIP.

Can I fly with my scuba tank?

Airlines permit scuba tanks to be transported as checked baggage only if the cylinder valve is completely removed or left fully open to demonstrate it contains no residual pressure. A cylinder that cannot be verified as empty will not be accepted. Most travellers remove the valve entirely and transport the tank with the valve packed separately. Check with your specific airline before travel as policies vary. For international dive trips, renting tanks at your destination is almost always more practical than transporting your own.
