Buying a mask with custom prescription lenses - If you have a complicated eye prescription and the generic pre-made lenses won't work for you, you can buy a mask with lenses custom ground to your exact prescription. The lenses will correct for nearsighted, farsighted, astigmatic, and prismatic correction, including matching pupillary distance. Readers are available for close-up reading of your gauge, dive computer, or underwater camera. if you need both distance correction and close-up correction for reading, the custom lens is the best option.

What to know about custom prescription dive mask lenses

Ground to your exact prescription
Unlike pre-made lenses that come in standard diopter increments, custom lenses are manufactured specifically for your eyes using the full details of your eyeglasses prescription — Sphere, Cylinder, Axis, and pupillary distance. This means correction for near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, and prismatic correction is all possible. If pre-made lenses have not worked well for you in the past, or your optometrist has a complex prescription on file, custom lenses are the right solution.

Four options to suit different vision needs
We offer Single Vision (distance or close-up correction), SEE-UNDER (single vision with the correction in the upper portion of the lens with plain glass at the bottom for reading your gauges or computer), Bifocal 28mm (distance correction with a 28mm reader segment at the bottom), and Bifocal 35mm (distance correction with a larger 35mm reader segment).

Takes 8 to 10 weeks — plan ahead
Custom lenses are manufactured to order and cannot be kept in stock. The typical turnaround from receiving your prescription to delivery is 8 to 10 weeks. If you are ordering for a specific trip or dive course, place your order well in advance. We will confirm your prescription details with you before sending the order to the lens manufacturer.

What you need to order
You will need a current eyeglasses prescription from your optometrist — not a contact lens prescription, as these are calculated differently. Your prescription must include the Sphere (SPH), Cylinder (CYL), Axis, and pupillary distance (PD) for each eye. If your prescription does not include PD, ask your optometrist to measure it. Once you place your order, we will follow up to confirm all details before proceeding.

Frequently asked questions

Who should choose custom lenses over pre-made optical lenses?

Custom lenses are the right choice if your prescription includes significant astigmatism (a Cylinder value on your prescription), if your two eyes have very different prescriptions, if your Sphere value falls outside the pre-made range (-1.0 to -10.0 for near-sighted or +1.0 to +6.0 for far-sighted), or if you have tried pre-made lenses and found them insufficient. For most people with a straightforward near-sighted or far-sighted prescription, pre-made lenses are a more affordable and faster option worth trying first.

What is the difference between the four custom lens options?

The Single Vision lens corrects your full field of view for either distance or close-up — whichever your primary need is. The SEE-UNDER version places the correction in the upper portion of the lens only, useful for divers who need no correction for reading their gauges or computer. The Bifocal 28mm provides distance correction across the full lens with a smaller 28mm reading segment at the bottom for close-up tasks. The Bifocal 35mm is the same concept with a larger 35mm reader segment, giving more reading area — popular with underwater photographers and technical divers who rely heavily on their computers and cameras. Not sure which suits your diving? Call us and describe how you dive and we will recommend the right option.

Can I use my contact lens prescription to order custom lenses?

No — you must use your eyeglasses prescription, not your contact lens prescription. Contact lens prescriptions account for the fact that the lens sits directly on the eye and are calculated differently. An eyeglasses prescription includes the Sphere, Cylinder, Axis, and pupillary distance (PD) values needed for custom lens manufacturing. If you do not have a current eyeglasses prescription, visit your optometrist before ordering. Your optometrist can also measure your pupillary distance if it is not already on your prescription.

How long do custom prescription dive mask lenses last?

With proper care, custom lenses typically last many years. The tempered glass lenses themselves are very durable. The most common cause of early replacement is changes to your prescription over time — if your vision changes significantly, the lenses may need to be remade. Rinse your mask thoroughly with fresh water after every use and store it out of direct sunlight to protect the lens coatings and the silicone skirt. If you scratch a lens, contact us about replacement options.
