Frequently asked questions
Why should I keep a dive log and what information should I record?
A dive log is both a safety record and a personal history of your diving. On the safety side, your dive log provides documentation of your experience level that dive operators and dive shops use when renting or selling equipment, guiding dives, and enrolling you in advanced courses — many operators require a minimum logged dive count before allowing independent or guided diving at certain sites. On the personal side, a log lets you track your buoyancy improvements, note dive sites you want to return to, record marine life sightings, and look back on years of diving experiences. At minimum, record date, location, maximum depth, bottom time, water temperature, visibility, gas used, weight carried, and who you dived with. Notes on what you saw, conditions, and equipment make the log genuinely useful to review before a return visit to the same site.
How many dives does each logbook hold?
The Innovative Scuba Dive Log Binder comes with a starting pack of log pages sufficient for your first dives, and can be expanded indefinitely with additional refill pages — the standard Logbook Pages pack covers 60 dives (30 double-sided pages) and the Logbook Refill Pages with Tabs covers 40 dives (20 pages). The Dive Logz Color Paper Logbook is a bound booklet with 50 log pages — enough for 50 dives. The TDO Paper Log Pages 2-pack covers 44 dives total across two stapled booklets of 22 pages each. For a new diver who logs every dive, the binder system with refill pages is the most practical long-term choice. For a single dive trip or as a gift, the Dive Logz bound booklet is the most self-contained and attractive option.
Can I get my logbook signed by my Divemaster or Instructor?
Yes — having your dive log signed by a Divemaster or Instructor after each supervised dive is standard practice and is what many dive operators and training agencies require. When you complete a dive or training session with us at The Dive Outfitters in Edmonton, our staff will sign and stamp your logbook. For dives completed elsewhere, the guide or Divemaster leading your dive should sign your log at the end of the session. You can also have your dive buddy sign or witness your dive log as well. A logbook with consistent signatures across your dive history is the most credible record of your diving experience when presenting it to dive operators at new destinations.
