What to look for in a large dive bag

Roller bags vs. duffel bags vs. backpacks
A wheeled roller bag — such as the Cressi Moby 3 or Cressi Piper — is the most convenient option for airport travel. Wheels handle the weight so you do not have to carry it across terminals and parking lots. The Cressi Piper is designed to meet carry-on size limits for most airlines, which eliminates checked baggage fees and the risk of lost gear. A large tarpaulin duffel — such as the Aropec Super Lightweight Backpack or DUI Unlimited Duffel — handles more capacity and is extremely durable, but you carry the full weight on your shoulders. A backpack style suits divers who hike to dive sites or travel to locations where wheeled bags are impractical.

Drysuit and undergarment bags
A drysuit is a bulky item that does not fit in a standard dive bag comfortably — it needs to be packed loosely to avoid creasing the material and seals. The DUI Unlimited Drysuit and Undergarment Duffel is specifically designed for this purpose, with enough capacity for a full drysuit plus undergarments in one bag. Made with weather-resistant tarpaulin material, reinforced grab handles, and both a detachable shoulder strap and backpack straps. If you travel to dive in your drysuit, this is the purpose-built solution — trying to stuff a drysuit into a generic bag compresses the seals and creases the zipper.

What fits in a large dive bag
A typical large dive bag must accommodate: BCD (bulky when deflated), wetsuit or drysuit, fins (often the longest item), mask, snorkel, boots, gloves, hood, and accessories. Fins are usually the determining factor — measure the length of your fins and confirm the bag's internal dimensions can accommodate them flat or at a slight angle. Some bags — like the Akona Globetrotter carry-on bag — allow fins to be strapped to the outside rather than packed inside, which significantly reduces required internal volume. Compression straps inside the bag help control shifting of soft gear during transit.

Airline carry-on vs. checked luggage
Most full dive kits will not fit in a carry-on — a BCD alone fills most overhead bins. The practical approach for international diving travel is to check your gear bag and carry your regulator on the plane in a dedicated padded bag. The regulator is the most expensive and most fragile item in your kit — checked baggage handling is hard on equipment. The Akona Globetrotter is a genuine exception: specifically sized to meet most airline carry-on restrictions with fins strapped outside, it lets you travel with your full snorkeling or light dive kit without checking bags. If flying with your regulators in a checked bag is unavoidable, surround them with soft gear and pack them in the centre of the bag.

Frequently asked questions

What size bag do I need for a full scuba kit?

A full scuba kit — BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel, boots, gloves, hood, and accessories — requires a bag of at least 100 litres of internal volume, and often more if the wetsuit is thick or the fins are large. The Cressi Moby 3 roller bag has a large main compartment with two exterior fin pockets designed specifically for this. The Aropec Super Lightweight Backpack and DUI Unlimited Duffel both handle a full kit comfortably. For snorkeling-only travel, a 50 to 70 litre bag is typically sufficient. If you are unsure whether a specific bag will fit your gear, contact us with your fin length and we can confirm before you order.

Can I take my scuba gear on a plane as carry-on?

A full scuba kit — including BCD and wetsuit — will not fit in a standard carry-on bag and must be checked. The exception is the Akona Globetrotter, which is designed to meet most airline carry-on size limits with fins attached to the outside of the bag. Regulators should always be carried on rather than checked — they are expensive, delicate, and difficult to replace if lost or damaged by baggage handlers. Empty scuba tanks can be transported as checked luggage with the valve removed or left fully open, but this is logistically complicated and most travel divers rent tanks at the destination.

Are the Cressi roller bags worth the price compared to a basic duffel?

For anyone who travels frequently for diving — multiple trips per year or longer liveaboard-style trips — a quality roller bag is worth the investment. The Cressi Moby 3 and Piper use robust construction specifically designed for scuba gear transport, with reinforced wheels, heavy-duty handles, and purpose-built fin pockets. A generic checked duffel tends to fail at handles and zippers within a couple of seasons of hard travel use. The more important calculation for frequent travelers is the Cressi Piper's carry-on capability — avoiding checked bag fees on multiple return flights quickly offsets the cost difference between a budget bag and a quality roller.
