Frequently asked questions

Is there a difference between men's and women's wetsuits?

Yes — a women's wetsuit is cut specifically for female body proportions: shorter torso length, narrower shoulders, and shaping at the chest and hips. A standard unisex or men's wetsuit on a female diver often fits poorly at the shoulders, gaps at the chest, and has a torso that is too long — all of which allow cold water to flush through at the gaps. A women's-specific wetsuit provides a closer, more comfortable fit that significantly improves thermal performance. We carry women's wetsuits in 3mm, 5mm, and 7mm thicknesses from Akona, Henderson, Oceaner, and Scubapro. If you have previously dived in a men's or unisex suit that did not fit well, trying a women's cut wetsuit will likely be a noticeable improvement.

How are men's and women's wetsuits sized differently?

Men's wetsuits are typically sized by chest circumference and height, with some brands also factoring in weight and waist measurement. Women's wetsuits use chest, waist, hip, and height measurements, with the cut adjusted for the chest-to-hip ratio typical of female body shapes. Each brand's size chart is specific to that brand — a size medium in Akona may fit differently than a medium in Henderson or Scubapro. Always check the manufacturer's size chart for the specific wetsuit you are considering rather than assuming standard sizing transfers between brands. If you are between sizes, the general recommendation is to size down in a wetsuit — neoprene stretches slightly with body heat and use, and a suit that fits snugly on the first try will feel more comfortable after a few dives.
