Why a dive computer is worth it
Traditional dive tables calculate your no-decompression limit based on the maximum depth of the dive — which is the most conservative possible calculation. A dive computer tracks your actual depth profile moment by moment and recalculates your limits in real time. If you spend most of a dive shallower than the maximum depth, a computer rewards you with significantly more bottom time than tables would allow. For most recreational divers, the investment in a computer pays off in longer, safer dives from the very first session.

Wrist computer vs. console computer
A wrist computer is worn like a watch and is always in your field of vision without reaching for a console. It is lighter, more compact for travel, and can often double as a freedive or snorkel computer at the surface. A console computer replaces your depth and pressure gauges in a traditional gauge console, providing digital readouts in the same familiar format as an analog console. Console computers suit divers who prefer a single integrated instrument cluster on one hose. Wrist computers suit divers who want a streamlined setup or who dive multiple disciplines.

When a gauge console is still the right choice
Not every diver needs a full dive computer. A traditional analog gauge console — submersible pressure gauge, depth gauge, and compass — provides reliable, battery-independent readings with nothing to configure or update. Some technical divers deliberately use a bottom timer and analog gauges as a backup to their primary computer. For divers on a budget or those who only dive infrequently, a quality analog console is a practical starting point, with the option to upgrade to a computer later.

Air integration — tank pressure on your wrist
Air-integrated dive computers receive tank pressure wirelessly from a transmitter installed on your regulator first stage, displaying remaining air alongside your depth, time, and no-decompression limits on a single screen. The computer can then calculate your surface air consumption (SAC) rate and factor your remaining gas into your NDL calculations — telling you not just how long the algorithm allows you to stay, but whether your air will actually last that long. Air integration does not replace a backup pressure gauge for most recreational divers, but it adds a meaningful layer of information during the dive.
