Frequently asked questions

What makes Ultralight arms and clamps different from other brands?

Ultralight Control Systems produces arguably the most refined ball-arm system available for underwater photography. Their arms and clamps are machined from aircraft-grade aluminium rather than injection-moulded materials, providing a combination of lightness and rigidity that professional underwater photographers rely on to hold lights precisely positioned without drift or vibration. The clamp mechanism on Ultralight components provides a secure, reproducible lock that does not require over-tightening and does not slip under the physical stresses of a dive. For a recreational diver building a first lighting setup, the price premium over Big Blue components may not be justified. For serious underwater photographers who need precise, repeatable light positioning and want components that last for years of demanding use, Ultralight's construction quality is genuinely in a different class.

Are Ultralight arms compatible with standard 1-inch ball mounts?

Yes — Ultralight uses the industry-standard 1-inch ball mount throughout their product line, making their arms and clamps compatible with ball-mount lights and accessories from Big Blue, Sealife (via adapter), and any other manufacturer using the 1-inch ball standard. You can start your arm system with Ultralight components and use any compatible lights from any brand, or add Ultralight arms to an existing setup that already has other brand components. The 1-inch ball standard is the universal language of underwater camera mounting systems — Ultralight components speak that language with greater precision than most alternatives.

Do I need Ultralight arms if I already have Big Blue arms?

Not necessarily — Big Blue arms perform well for most recreational underwater photography applications. The practical difference between Big Blue and Ultralight arms becomes most apparent under specific conditions: when you need very precise light positioning that holds exactly where you set it for a long macro or coral portrait session, when you are doing high-volume shooting where repeated arm adjustments need to be fast and exact, or when you are building a professional system where every component is chosen for maximum performance. For a diver who shoots casually on dive trips, Big Blue arms are a practical and cost-effective choice. For a diver who spends serious time on underwater photography and wants to eliminate equipment as a variable in image quality, Ultralight is the professional standard.
