Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a strobe light and a marker light for diving?

A tank marker light is typically smaller and less bright and is meant to mark your position underwater and at the surface. It helps your buddy locate you in low visibility and allows the boat crew to track your position during night dives. A strobe emits a repeating flash that is typically brighter — the intermittent flash is visible at a much greater distance, making strobes more effective for surface signalling, marking entry and exit points at night, and standing out against background lights on the shore or boat. For underwater buddy tracking, a marker light is practical and won't blind your buddy underwater. For surface visibility to boats and surface support, a strobe is more effective.

What is a water-activated marker light and when should I use one?

A water-activated marker light turns on automatically the moment it contacts water — no switch to forget, no dead battery from accidental pre-dive activation. It is designed to clip to your tank valve, BCD shoulder, or cam band and run throughout the dive, turning off when dried after the dive. Water-activated lights are particularly practical for boat diving at night where you enter the water immediately after gearing up — the light is already active and marking your position before you even think about it.

Do I need a marker light if I have an SMB?

A surface marker buoy (SMB) and a marker light serve different purposes and complement each other rather than substituting. An SMB marks your ascent position for the boat and surface support above the water line. A marker light marks your position to other divers underwater and provides a surface signal that is visible in the dark, in fog, or in conditions where a coloured SMB tube may not stand out. On a night dive where the boat crew is monitoring multiple divers' positions, a strobe or marker light on your tank or BCD combined with an SMB at the surface gives the surface team the most complete picture of your position. Carrying both is the standard for serious night diving.
