Frequently asked questions
How do I replace the mouthpiece on my snorkel?
On most snorkels the mouthpiece pulls straight off the lower tube connector — no tools required. Grip the mouthpiece firmly and pull down while twisting slightly if needed. The new mouthpiece pushes back on the same connector until it seats securely. Before ordering a replacement, check whether your snorkel uses a standard connector size or a brand-specific fitting. Tusa snorkels, for example, use a unique connector that requires a Tusa-specific mouthpiece — a standard replacement will not fit. If you are unsure, email us a photo of your snorkel and the lower tube connector and we will identify the right mouthpiece for you.
What is the difference between the mouthpiece styles — standard, comfort bite, long bite, and curved?
All mouthpieces attach to the snorkel the same way, but the bite tab shape and position differ. A standard mouthpiece has bite tabs of average length — suitable for most adults. A comfort bite mouthpiece has an upper-mouth retainer design that takes pressure off the jaw muscles, reducing fatigue on longer sessions. A long bite mouthpiece has extended bite tabs that reach further back in the mouth, giving more teeth surface to grip — useful for divers who tend to clench. A curved mouthpiece angles slightly to follow the natural shape of the mouth. If you experience jaw soreness or fatigue during snorkeling, the comfort bite or a mouldable mouthpiece are the best starting points. For a fully custom fit, the Seacure mouldable mouthpiece is heat-formed to the exact shape of your teeth and jaw.
Which snorkel keeper should I buy — rubber figure-8, quick-release plastic, or squeeze-release?
The rubber figure-8 keeper is the simplest and least expensive option — it stretches to fit over most mask straps and snorkel barrels and requires no separate parts. The trade-off is that it can be fiddly to attach and detach, especially with cold or wet hands. A quick-release plastic keeper is a two-part clip system — one part stays on the mask strap, the other stays on the snorkel barrel, and they click together and apart easily. This is the most convenient option for divers who frequently remove and reattach their snorkel. The squeeze-release style works on the same two-part principle but uses a squeeze mechanism rather than a push-clip. Check your snorkel barrel shape before ordering — round-barrel snorkels need a round keeper, oval-barrel snorkels need an oval keeper. If you are unsure of the shape, measure the barrel or send us a photo.
What mouthpiece size do I need for a child's snorkel?
Children's snorkels require smaller mouthpieces than adult models — the bite tabs are shorter and the overall size is reduced to fit smaller mouths comfortably. We carry several small and extra small models to fit a variety of kid's snorkels. If a child is biting through the bite tabs or complaining that the mouthpiece is sore, the adult-sized mouthpiece is almost certainly too large. We also carry a small adult mouthpiece which bridges the gap for older children or adults with smaller mouths who find the standard size uncomfortable.
Should I keep a spare mouthpiece and snorkel keeper in my dive bag?
Yes — both are among the most common gear failures at a dive site and both are inexpensive and easy to carry. A mouthpiece can tear at the bite tabs after extended use, especially if you clench during dives, and a worn bite tab becomes uncomfortable quickly. A snorkel keeper can split, crack, or simply fall off the mask strap — particularly rubber figure-8 keepers that have been exposed to repeated sun and salt. Our Save-A-Dive Kit includes a spare mouthpiece, snorkel keeper, mask strap, and fin strap in a compact dry pouch — a practical all-in-one solution for your gear bag. Individually, a spare mouthpiece and a snorkel keeper together cost under $20 and have rescued many snorkel sessions.
