Tips and tricks to get the most out of your mask
Like any sports equipment a good quality mask is an investment that will take care of you as long as you take care of it.
Cleaning your mask. New masks need a good initial cleaning before use. When manufactured, a mask is left with a fine film of oil on the glass lens and this needs to be removed. Wash your mask with mild liquid dish soap and a soft cloth, also a soft toothbrush can really help clean in the corners. Oftentimes the first time the mask will need a couple of washes. This will help keep the fog down as well.
Ensure your mask gets a good rinse with fresh water after each use and a good wash with soap before storing it. Mask should always be stored in a cool, dark place, preferably in its case for protection. Animals will tend to chew on the silicone if they have access so make sure it is out of reach.
Defogging your mask is simple as long as the mask is clean. Avoid putting sunscreen or moisturizer on your face prior to putting on your mask as it can make the mask slip around and will make your mask harder to de-fog. Many divers or snorkelers use good old fashion spit to de-fog the mask but you do have other options. Products such as Sea Gold and Sea Drops can be applied to the mask lens prior to the dive to keep the mask clear.
Masks made with clear silicone can over time start to discolor causing the silicone to become opaque, cloudy or yellow. This is only a cosmetic change it will not effect the function of the mask. This reaction is simply caused by time but can be accelerated by chemicals, heat and light. Don't leave your mask sitting out in the sun all day to keep it looking better longer.
