What to look for in dive boots, water shoes, and socks

Boot or water shoe vs. neoprene sock — know the difference
Neoprene boots and water shoes are designed to be worn with open-heel fins — they provide meaningful thermal insulation, a hard rubber sole for grip and protection on rocky shores and boat decks, and a structured fit. A neoprene or lycra sock is a thin, flexible layer worn inside a full-foot fin for comfort and light warmth. Socks cannot substitute for a boot when using open-heel fins, and boots cannot be used with full-foot fins.

Thickness — match it to your water temperature
For cold or temperate water diving — including most Canadian diving — a minimum of 5mm to 7mm is needed to keep your feet warm throughout a dive. Even for snorkeling in Canada, or other watersports like kayaking, a thick 5mm to 7mm boot is recommended. For tropical water, 2mm to 3mm is typically sufficient. Thicker is rarely a problem — cold feet are far more uncomfortable than slightly warm ones, and neoprene boots do not overheat the way a wetsuit can.

Sole type — hard rubber is non-negotiable for shore diving
Any boot or water shoe used for shore diving, walking on rocky terrain, or boarding a dive boat should have a hard rubber sole. The sole protects the neoprene from abrasion and puncture, and gives you secure grip on wet surfaces. A soft or absent sole wears through quickly and provides poor grip. Check each product description — all boots in our range designed for diving include a hard rubber sole.

Toe cap and heel stopper
A rubber toe cap adds durability to the front of the boot, particularly important if you are sliding your foot in and out of open-heel fins repeatedly — the fin pocket wears through the neoprene at the toe faster than anywhere else. A rubber heel stopper prevents the fin strap from sliding down off your heel during a dive. Both features extend the life of the boot and improve performance in the water. Look for these details in the product description when diving in open-heel fins regularly.

Frequently asked questions

What size dive boots should I buy?

Dive boots should fit like a regular shoe — snug enough that your foot does not slide around inside, but not so tight that circulation is restricted. Restricted circulation will make your feet cold much faster than a slightly loose fit. Most boots are sized in whole sizes. If you are between sizes, go up rather than down. Keep in mind that if you are buying open-heel fins to wear with the boots, you will need to size the fins to fit over the boot you will be wearing. Check the fin's sizing guidelines to see what size of fin is recommended.

Can I use dive boots for shore diving in Canada?

Yes — neoprene dive boots are well suited to Canadian shore diving. For cold water diving in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Maritime provinces, a 5mm or 7mm boot will keep your feet warm during entry, surface intervals, and exit. The hard rubber sole handles rocky shorelines, boat ramps, and uneven terrain. If you are diving in very cold water or doing extended dives, consider layering a thin neoprene sock inside the boot for added warmth. Pair with open-heel scuba fins sized to fit over the boot.

What is the difference between a neoprene sock and a lycra sock?

A neoprene sock is thicker — typically 1.5mm to 3mm — and provides a meaningful amount of thermal insulation in addition to comfort inside a full-foot fin. A lycra sock is very thin, providing no real thermal protection but reducing friction and chafing inside the fin on a long snorkel session. Lycra socks are also popular for preventing blisters when breaking in a new pair of full-foot fins. For cold water, choose neoprene. For tropical conditions where comfort is the only goal, lycra is sufficient and lighter to pack.

How do I care for my dive boots after use?

Rinse thoroughly with clean fresh water after every use — salt and chlorine degrade neoprene and the stitching over time. Turn the boots inside out if possible to rinse the interior as well. Allow them to dry completely — inside and out — before storing. Never pack wet boots into a bag for storage, as this leads to mold and odor. If boots begin to take on a life of their own and develop an odor after extended use, soak them in a diluted neoprene shampoo solution, rinse thoroughly, and air dry. Store out of direct sunlight to prevent UV degradation of the neoprene.
