What to look for in scuba diving fins

Open-heel vs. full-foot
Open-heel fins have an adjustable heel strap or spring strap and are designed to be worn with neoprene boots — essential for cold-water diving in Canada, shore diving on rocky terrain, or any situation where foot protection matters. Full-foot fins fit like a shoe and are worn barefoot or with a thin sock — suited to warm tropical water where you are entering from a boat directly into the ocean. If you dive in both environments, open-heel fins with a good boot are the more versatile choice.

Blade length and stiffness
Scuba diving fins need a longer, stiffer blade than snorkeling fins to push your body plus the weight of a tank and gear through the water efficiently. A stiffer blade delivers more power per kick but increases leg fatigue on longer dives. A more flexible blade reduces fatigue and cramping but gives less thrust per kick. Match the stiffness to your fitness level and the type of diving — relaxed reef dives versus drift diving or stronger currents call for different choices.

Strap style — quick-release, spring, or bungee
Most open-heel fins come with a quick-release buckle strap that adjusts for size and unclips for easy removal at the surface. Spring straps replace the adjustable strap with a coiled spring — not adjustable, but much faster to get on and off, and popular with divers who frequently enter from boats or jump entries. Rubber bungee straps work on the same concept as spring straps. Most fin models allow the stock strap to be swapped for a spring or bungee strap as an upgrade.

Consider your kicking style
The flutter kick — straight legs moving up and down with a slight knee bend — is the standard kick for recreational diving and works well with most fins. The frog kick (also called the cave kick) is a horizontal kick used by technical divers and cave divers or recreational divers trying to avoid disturbing a silty bottom. Some fin designs are optimized for one style or the other, and some perform well with both. If you are an advanced diver who uses a frog kick regularly, look for fins specifically noted for frog kick efficiency.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use scuba diving fins for snorkeling?

Yes — scuba diving fins work fine for snorkeling, though they are heavier and stiffer than fins designed specifically for snorkeling, which can cause more leg fatigue during a long surface session. If you primarily snorkel but occasionally scuba dive, a mid-stiffness open-heel scuba fin is a practical choice that covers both activities. If you mostly snorkel, a lighter snorkeling fin will be more comfortable. Snorkeling fins are generally not recommended for scuba diving as they lack the blade power needed to move a diver carrying a full kit.

What size fins do I need?

Full-foot fins are sized like shoes — use your regular shoe size. Open-heel fins are sized to fit over a neoprene boot, so the boot thickness matters. If you dive in 3mm boots, you will typically need a fin one size larger than your shoe size; in 5mm or 7mm boots, go up two sizes. When in doubt, size up rather than down — a fin that is slightly large with a properly adjusted strap is more comfortable than one that is too tight. If you are local to Edmonton, come in and try them on with your boots.

What is the difference between a spring strap and a standard buckle strap?

A standard quick-release buckle strap is adjustable — you set the length for your boot and buckle it closed each time. A spring strap uses the tension of a coiled spring to hold the strap against your heel — there is no buckle to close, so you simply step in and the strap snaps into place, and step out by pulling the tab. Spring straps are significantly faster to put on and remove, which matters when doing repeated boat dives or getting out of the water quickly. They are not adjustable, so sizing needs to be right. We carry replacement spring straps for many popular fin models in our fin parts section.

How do I prevent leg cramps while diving with fins?

Cramps during a dive are most often caused by fins that are too stiff for your current fitness level, kicking with a pointed toe rather than a flexed foot, or dehydration. Start with a moderate-stiffness fin if you are a newer diver and build up to stiffer blades as your leg strength develops. Focus on kicking from the hip with a relaxed ankle rather than from the knee. Stay well hydrated before your dive — even mild dehydration significantly increases cramp risk. If cramps do strike underwater, stop kicking, grab the tip of the fin blade, and pull it toward you to stretch the calf muscle.

Can I replace the strap on my fins?

Yes — fin straps and buckles are the most commonly replaced part on open-heel fins, and we carry replacements for most popular models. Check our fin parts section, or email us a photo of your fin and the broken strap and we will identify the right replacement. Many divers also take the opportunity to upgrade from a standard buckle strap to a spring strap at the same time, which is a worthwhile improvement in convenience.
