What is a scuba full face mask and how is it different from a standard mask and regulator?

A scuba full face mask seals around the entire face — eyes, nose, and mouth — and integrates the second stage regulator directly into the mask body. Instead of biting down on a mouthpiece, you breathe naturally through both nose and mouth inside the sealed mask space. This eliminates jaw fatigue entirely on long dives, protects the face from cold water, and is essential in contaminated water environments where you do not want any exposure to the water. Standard recreational scuba diving uses a separate mask and regulator with a mouthpiece — a full face mask is a specialty item most often used by commercial divers, public safety and police dive teams, and divers working in contaminated water.

Can I use an underwater communications system with a full face mask?

Yes — one of the primary advantages of a full face mask for professional applications is compatibility with hardwired or wireless underwater communications systems. The OTS Guardian Full Face Mask is specifically designed for professional diving operations where surface communication is required. A diver wearing a full face mask can speak clearly into a microphone built into the mask, allowing two-way communication with the surface or other divers. This capability is not available with a standard mask and mouthpiece regulator setup.

Is special training required to use a scuba full face mask?

Yes — a full face mask is a significantly different piece of equipment from a standard mask and regulator, and requires familiarization and specific skills training before use in open water. Emergency procedures differ: mask removal, clearing, and regulator removal all work differently with a full face mask. The OTS Guardian uses a removable second stage that can be separated from the mask for storage and cleaning. Is a full face snorkeling mask the same as a scuba full face mask?

No — these are completely different products. Full face snorkeling masks (such as the Cressi Baron or Duke in our snorkeling sets) are surface-only devices that allow natural breathing at the surface through a built-in snorkel. They cannot be connected to a scuba regulator and must never be used for breath-hold diving below the surface or with scuba equipment. A scuba full face mask is a professional-grade device that connects to a standard scuba regulator first stage and is designed for use at depth with scuba equipment. The two products share a similar visual appearance but are functionally entirely different.
