High Quality Gear -  Divemaster & Instructor tested and approved

Buy kids snorkeling gear in Canada — masks, snorkels, fins, snorkeling vests, water shoes, wetsuits, and reef-safe sunscreen, all sized specifically for children and youth. Our kids gear is the same high quality as our adult range — soft silicone masks, dry-top snorkels, and adjustable fins that actually fit small feet — because gear that leaks or hurts is the fastest way to put a child off snorkeling for good. Every product has been used and recommended by our Divemasters and Instructors. Parent tip: Get kids used to their gear before the water. Let them wear the mask and breathe through the snorkel in the bathtub, the backyard, or just around the house. The sooner wearing a mask feels normal, the easier the first real snorkel session will be — whether that is the local pool or a tropical reef.

What to know when buying snorkeling gear for kids

Kids need gear sized for kids — not small adult gear
Adult masks, even the smallest sizes, typically do not seal properly on a child's face. A mask that leaks will end the snorkel session immediately. Our kids masks use the same soft silicone skirts and tempered glass lenses as the adult range, but the frame and skirt are dimensioned for smaller faces. The snorkel mouthpiece matters too — an adult-sized bite tab is uncomfortable for small mouths and causes jaw fatigue quickly. Our kids snorkels include extra-small silicone mouthpieces.

Snorkeling vests for safety and confidence
A snorkeling vest gives children buoyancy at the surface so they can rest comfortably and focus on looking at the fish rather than treading water. It is not a life jacket and should not replace adult supervision, but it adds a meaningful layer of comfort and security — particularly for younger or less confident swimmers in deeper water. Size the vest by weight and chest measurement, not age — a vest that is too large will ride up over a child's face in the water.

Water shoes protect small feet
Rocky beaches, coral, and boat decks are hard on bare feet — for kids especially, who are less cautious about where they step. A neoprene water shoe with a hard rubber sole protects against cuts and abrasions and provides grip on wet surfaces. Kids water shoes also provide a small amount of warmth in cooler water. Size them like regular shoes — snug enough that they do not slip off in the water, but not so tight that circulation is restricted.

Reef-safe sunscreen for kids
Children are often in the water longer than adults and less consistent about reapplying sunscreen. A long-sleeve UPF 50+ rashguard covers the torso and arms without any reapplication needed. For exposed skin, use a mineral reef-safe sunscreen — we carry Stream2Sea SPF 45 Kids Sunscreen, formulated specifically for children with chamomile and calendula for sensitive skin, and free from oxybenzone and other reef-damaging chemicals. Protecting young skin from UV damage early matters, and protecting the reef they are snorkeling on matters equally.

Frequently asked questions

What age can kids start snorkeling?

Most children can start learning to snorkel from around age 5 or 6, once they are comfortable putting their face in the water and can follow basic instructions. Younger children can be introduced to the mask and snorkel in a bathtub or shallow pool before attempting open water. The key is comfort — a child who is at ease with the equipment will adapt quickly. There is no fixed minimum age, and comfort level and water confidence vary considerably between children. Starting with a snorkeling vest and shallow, calm water makes the first experience positive for most kids.

How do I know which mask size fits my child?

Place the mask on your child's face without putting on the strap. Ask them to inhale gently through the nose — the mask should suction onto the face and stay there without the strap holding it. If air leaks in or the mask slides, try a different size or model. We have a couple of smaller size masks that are perfect for children and smaller youth. If you are in Edmonton, bring your child in and we can help find the right fit in a couple of minutes.

Should I buy a dry snorkel or a basic snorkel for my child?

For most children, a dry snorkel is the better choice — the float valve at the top prevents water from entering the tube when they dip below the surface, which removes one more distraction and frustration while they are learning. A basic open-top snorkel is less expensive and works fine once a child understands how to clear water with an exhale, but for beginners the dry top makes the learning process much smoother. We carry both — the Kid's Dry Snorkel is the one we recommend for first-timers.

Do kids need a wetsuit for snorkeling in Canada?

For snorkeling in Canadian lakes and ocean waters, a wetsuit is strongly recommended — water temperatures in most Canadian outdoor locations are cold enough to cause discomfort and hypothermia risk even in summer. A 2mm to 3mm wetsuit provides meaningful warmth for short sessions in cool water; a 5mm suit is better for extended snorkeling in colder conditions. Children lose body heat faster than adults, so erring toward a thicker wetsuit is sensible. For tropical vacations, a light rashguard or no wetsuit is typically sufficient. See our kids wetsuits for available sizes and thicknesses.
