Frequently asked questions

How do I replace the strap on my dive or snorkeling mask?

Most mask straps simply unclip or slide off the buckles on either side of the mask frame — no tools required. Pull the old strap out of the buckle slots, thread the new strap through in the same way, and adjust the length. Silicone straps are the best replacement material — they are softer than rubber, last longer, and do not dry out or crack with UV exposure the way older rubber straps do. We carry replacement straps in standard 20mm width and narrow 16mm width to fit most mask models. If you are unsure which width fits your mask, email us a photo and we will confirm.

Can I dive with a moustache or beard and still get a good mask seal?

Facial hair breaks the silicone skirt seal against the skin, which causes water to leak into the mask — a frustrating and persistent problem for bearded divers. The most effective solution is a silicone mask seal product applied as a thin layer along the upper lip and anywhere the skirt meets facial hair before putting the mask on. Our Mustache/Mask Seal by Tropical Seas is specifically formulated for this purpose and will not damage the silicone skirt or lens. Avoid petroleum jelly (Vaseline) as a substitute — it degrades silicone over time and can cause the skirt to break down prematurely.

What is the difference between mask defog gel and defog spray — which should I use?

Both do the same job — preventing the lens from fogging underwater — but the application differs slightly. Defog gel is thicker and typically more concentrated: apply a small amount to the inside of the dry lens, spread it around, and rinse lightly before diving. Defog spray is more convenient for quick application — a few sprays, a spread, and a rinse. The Sea Gold gel is our top seller and is highly effective on both glass and plastic lenses. The Stream2Sea defog is reef-safe and formulated with non-toxic, biodegradable ingredients — a good choice if you are environmentally conscious about what goes into the water. Either works well; it comes down to personal preference on application method.

What should I keep in my save-a-dive kit for mask emergencies?

The most common mask-related problems at a dive site are a snapped strap, a lost snorkel keeper, and a fogging lens. A well-stocked kit covers all three: a spare silicone mask strap, a snorkel keeper clip, and a small bottle of defog. Our Save-A-Dive Kit bundles a silicone mask strap, rubber fin strap with buckles, a silicone mouthpiece, a snorkel keeper, and a mask defog — all in a compact dry pouch that fits in your gear bag. Every one of our Instructors and Divemasters carries something similar. It is a small investment that has saved many
