Buy mesh bags and duffels for scuba diving and snorkeling in Canada — mesh toggle bags, drawstring shoulder bags, small and large mesh duffels, heavy-duty mesh backpacks, and foldable mesh duffels for travel. Mesh is the preferred material for dive site use — it drains immediately, allows wet gear to air dry, and lets you see contents without opening the bag. Available from Saekodive, Akona, and Aropec in sizes from compact mask-and-snorkel pouches to full scuba kit duffels.

What to look for in a mesh bag or duffel

Why mesh is the right material for diving
Salt water, sand, and chlorine make wet dive gear a challenging thing to transport. A sealed nylon bag traps moisture — gear that goes in wet comes out still damp hours later and starts developing odor and mildew quickly. Mesh drains immediately when lifted out of the water or set down after rinsing, allows airflow from all sides, and lets gear dry significantly faster. On a dive boat where space is limited and bags get wet by default, mesh is the standard. You can also see what is inside the bag from the outside, which matters when you are gearing up quickly and do not want to unpack everything to find your gloves.

Choosing the right size
Match the bag to what you carry. A mesh toggle bag (the smallest option, under $10) fits a mask and a snorkel — ideal as an in-suitcase organizer or for carrying only a mask and snorkel to the beach. A drawstring shoulder bag or duffel fits a full snorkeling set including fins. A small mesh duffel fits a wetsuit, mask, snorkel, and accessories. A large mesh duffel or heavy-duty mesh backpack — like the Aropec Heavy Duty Mesh Backpack or Akona Azul — fits a complete scuba kit. The foldable mesh duffel is designed to pack flat inside checked luggage and expand at the destination.

Mesh backpacks — hands-free for shore diving
For Canadian shore diving where you hike or walk to the entry point, a mesh backpack distributes the weight of your kit across your shoulders rather than carrying it in one hand. The Aropec Heavy Duty Mesh Backpack uses 840D nylon mesh with a side zipper for access to the middle and bottom of the bag without fully unpacking it — useful when fins are at the bottom and you need your mask first. The Akona Azul uses recycled 600D polyester mesh fabric with ergonomic shoulder straps and a chest strap — designed specifically for divers who carry significant kit weight to shore dive sites.

The foldable mesh duffel — the travel solution
The Saekodive Foldable Mesh Duffel addresses a specific travel need: you want a large dive site bag at your destination but do not want to pack it as luggage separately. The foldable duffel collapses to 15 inches in diameter — small enough to fit inside a checked gear bag — then unfolds into a full-size mesh duffel at the dive site. Pull it out at the hotel, throw your gear in, head to the boat. At the end of the trip, rinse it, shake it dry, and fold it back into your luggage. It is the most practical approach for divers who travel without a dedicated dive site bag.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a mesh bag as my only dive bag?

For local diving where you drive to the site, a large mesh duffel or backpack works perfectly as your primary bag — it handles the full kit, drains immediately, and dries fast between dives. For travel where gear is checked as airline luggage, mesh is not appropriate as a checked bag — it provides no protection from impact during baggage handling and offers no weather resistance. The practical approach for traveling divers is to own a large nylon or tarpaulin checked luggage bag for transit and a mesh bag or duffel that packs inside it for use at the dive site — either as a second bag or a foldable option that takes up minimal space.

What is the difference between the small and large mesh duffels?

The small mesh duffel (approximately 20 x 13 x 11 inches) suits snorkeling gear, a wetsuit, and light accessories — good for a day at the pool or beach with a limited kit. The large mesh duffel (approximately 30 x 20 x 12 inches) handles a full scuba kit including BCD, wetsuit, fins, mask, and accessories. If you are unsure which size you need, consider whether fins will fit — fins are typically the longest item and often determine which bag size works. Our mesh duffel product pages list dimensions clearly; measure your longest fins from tip to tip and compare before ordering.

Will a mesh bag protect my gear from rain or salt spray on a boat?

No — mesh is intentionally not waterproof. It is designed for wet gear that is already damp, not for protecting dry gear from getting wet. If you need to protect dry clothes, valuables, or sensitive electronics on a boat where spray is a factor, use a dry bag or waterproof case for those items. Your dive gear itself is designed to get wet and handles salt spray without issue. The mesh bag keeps your gear contained and allows it to drain and dry — that is its purpose, not weather protection. See our dry boxes and waterproof bags for protecting valuables on the water.

Can I carry my weight belt in my gear bag?

No — we recommend that you carry your weights and your weight belt seperately and not in your gear bag. Your weights can shift inside the gear bag and damage your mask, snorkel, fins, or BCD components. Carry your weights seperately, either in a weight bag designed with reinforced seams to withstand the extra weight, or use the webbing of the weight belt to carry the weights.
