Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between pre-made and custom prescription mask lenses?
Pre-made lenses come in standard diopter increments and are not your exact prescription — but for most people they are close enough to make a real difference underwater. They are in stock and can be installed while you wait. Custom lenses are ground to your exact prescription, take longer to produce, and cost more. We recommend trying pre-made first unless your prescription is complex or highly different between your two eyes.
Do I need my contact lens prescription or my eyeglasses prescription?
You need your eyeglasses (distance) prescription from your optometrist. Contact lens prescriptions are calculated differently and cannot be used to select mask lenses. If you are unsure, bring your prescription card in or email us a photo and we can help determine which lens option is right for you.For custom lenses, you will also need the PD (pupillary distance) from your optometrist.
Can I get bifocal lenses in a dive mask?
Yes — custom bifocal lenses are available for divers who cannot see clearly at either distance or close-up. A bifocal mask corrects distance vision through the upper portion of the lens and adds a reader correction in the lower third for reading gauges, dive computers, or cameras. This requires a custom lens order rather than pre-made. We also offer pre-made reader lenses (positive only) if you only need help reading close-up.
How do I know which diopter strength to order for pre-made lenses?
Your eyeglasses prescription lists a Sphere (SPH) value for each eye — this is your diopter strength. Negative numbers mean near-sighted; positive numbers mean far-sighted. We stock negative lenses from -1.0 to -10.0 and positive lenses from +1.0 to +6.0. If your two eyes have significantly different prescriptions, custom lenses will give a better result than pre-made. Download our generic lens calculator for guidance, or call us at (888) 483-0049.
Can prescription lenses be added to any mask?
Pre-made optical lenses are compatible with most standard two-lens (double-lens) dive masks — including the Saekodive Moray and Tusa Ceos. Single-lens and frameless masks generally cannot accept optical inserts. Custom lenses can be made for a wider range of mask styles. If you are unsure whether your mask accepts prescription lenses, contact us with the mask model and we will confirm. If you already have a favorite mask and just need help reading close-up, we also carry the stick-on readers that can go into any dive or snorkel mask.
