Choosing the right snorkeling equipment

Choosing the right snorkeling gear for you and your family can be tough with so many different options available. Here are some tips and things to consider when shopping for a snorkel set. 

MASK

Look for a mask with high grade silicone, this is softer and holds a seal on your face better and more comfortably. Make sure your mask is made with tempered safety glass, this will last longer and less foggy. Masks come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most people fit into the average category however if you find yourself buying junior size sunglasses then you will need a small or narrow mask. Some masks have the option for prescription lenses which is perfect for those in need of glasses but not happy with contact lenses. 

SNORKEL

Find a snorkel with high grade silicone on the mouthpiece for your comfort. Check the clip for attaching to a mask it is best that the snorkel can be easily removed and added to the mask without being too easy that it might fall off. Snorkel tops can vary as well. Basic or open ended snorkels are more traditional tube style. Semi-dry snorkels have a wave guard at the top, blocking waves and splashes but will flood when fully submerged. Dry-top snorkels have a float at the top of the snorkel that will float up when water is present this will block the water from filling into the snorkel. 

FINS

Fin styles and sizes range as much as shoes. Fins can be designed to specialize for snorkeling, swimming or Scuba diving. There are 2 major styles of fin pockets; the full foot which just slides on to your bare foot like a slipper or open heel which often needs a beach shoe or wet suit boot to be worn in the fin. The advantage to wearing shoe or boot is that it can provide additional protection for your feet when entering and exiting the water as well as thermal protection in cooler water.  When choosing a fin for scuba you will need something of sufficient strength and surface area to help push you and all your scuba gear around in the water. With Scuba you have a limited air supply and must work efficiently as well to not drain your tank too quickly. Fins designed for Scuba can transfer to snorkel activities however snorkel fins are usually too light and small for use with Scuba.
