1. A mesh gear bag
A mesh bag is the simplest and most practical way to carry snorkeling gear to the beach or boat. Mesh drains immediately when you pull it out of the water, and allows wet gear to air dry on the way home rather than sitting in a sealed bag and developing mildew. The beach or boat is no place for a wet phone, credit card, or car key. 3. A waterproof fish ID card
Half the enjoyment of snorkeling is knowing what you are looking at. A waterproof plastic fish ID card from Franko Maps fits in a BCD pocket or can be tucked under a wetsuit cuff — durable enough to use underwater, laminated, and specific to the region you are diving. 4. A float or swim buoy
A surface float marks your position for passing boats and provides a place to rest or stow gear at the surface. For freediving and breath-hold snorkeling in open water, a visible float is an important safety item — it signals to boat traffic that a diver is below.
